More Than Opera: A Summer Musical Spectacular in the Heart of Valletta

From Carmen to Gladiator, Neapolitan classics to musical theatre favourites, Opera in the Capital 2026 invites you to an evening of timeless favourites.

One of Malta’s most celebrated summer cultural events is set to return this month as Opera in the Capital 2026 transforms St George’s Square into a spectacular open-air stage on 27 June at 9pm.

Bringing together internationally acclaimed artists, the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra and a programme packed with operatic masterpieces, cinematic favourites, beloved classics and Maltese songs, the concert promises an unforgettable evening under the stars in the heart of the capital.

Presented by the Valletta Cultural Agency, this year’s edition features renowned Maltese tenors Alan Sciberras and Cliff Zammit Stevens, alongside acclaimed mezzo-soprano Marvic Monreal, whose performances continue to earn recognition on some of Europe’s most prestigious stages. They will be joined by the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Ryan Paul Abela, delivering a musical experience that blends artistic excellence with broad audience appeal.

Valletta Cultural Agency Chairman, Jason Micallef, together with the Minister for Arts, Culture, and National Heritage Dr Malcolm Paul Agius Galea announced this event at St George’s Square, in Valletta, during a press conference this morning.

The Minister for Arts, Culture, and National Heritage Dr Malcolm Paul Agius Galea said that “An event such as this not only enhances the public’s cultural experience but also continues to reinforce Valletta’s position as a dynamic and vibrant cultural hub.” He added that the Government will remain committed to investing in initiatives that make culture more visible, more accessible and more relevant to our communities.

Valletta Cultural Agency Chairman Jason Micallef said, “Opera in the Capital continues to celebrate the power of music to bring people together in one of Malta’s most iconic public spaces, St George’s Square, Valletta. Whether you are a seasoned opera enthusiast or attending an opera concert for the very first time, this event offers a unique and accessible cultural experience for everyone.”
