{"id":25581,"date":"2022-10-21T02:15:50","date_gmt":"2022-10-21T02:15:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vca.gov.mt\/?p=25581"},"modified":"2022-11-02T07:17:54","modified_gmt":"2022-11-02T07:17:54","slug":"bridging-the-past-and-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vca.gov.mt\/en\/blog\/bridging-the-past-and-future\/","title":{"rendered":"Bridging the past and future"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"blog-text\" data-v-4b28e525=\"\">\n<p>Tucked away behind Old Bakery Street and Auberge de Bavi\u00e8re, this area in the lower part of Valletta, \u2018Il-Bi\u010b\u010berija\u2019, served as the main abattoir for the Order of St John in Malta.<\/p>\n<p>With over 400 years of history, the building had several functions over the years and housed eight fuctioning bakeries for a large chunk of time.<\/p>\n<p>For over 50 years, the building was dilapidated and forgotten with extensive damage, pest infestation, abuse and a general degradation of the area.<\/p>\n<p>Restoration works started in the run up to 2018, when Valletta was crowned European Capital of Culture.<\/p>\n<p>Together with residents and several public entities including the Restoration Directorate, il-Bi\u010b\u010berija l-Antika was cleaned and given new life.<\/p>\n<p>Works were spread out over several years with an investment of \u20ac10.4 million, thanks in part to the European Regional Development Funds.<\/p>\n<p>On the 24th March, this building with over 400 years of history, was opened as the Valletta Design Cluster bridging Valletta\u2019s past and the island\u2019s future.<\/p>\n<p>Spread over 3,212 square metres, the Cluster offers 15 studios; tools and machines for prototyping; two international project labs; a conference hall; and a food space, including a nine-station training kitchen, among other areas.
