The first concert will be on Sunday, 2 October, at 7:30 pm at the Manoel Theatre, Valletta.
The highlight of Cura’s concert in Malta will be one of his compositions, a song cycle based on the sonnets of one of the most influential poets of the 20th century, Pablo Neruda. Written between 1995 and 2006, Si muero, sobrevíveme! (If I die, survive me!) will see the participation of renowned Maltese actress Jane Marshall who will give life to the character of Neruda’s wife, Matilde Urrutia.
Cura will return to Teatru Manoel for the second concert in March 2023 with a new production of Giacomo Puccini’s opera Tosca. Teatru Manoel will produce this opera.
Minister Owen Bonnici spoke about the importance of initiatives of this type because they put the theatre at the forefront.
Minister Bonnici commended this outcome “This is perfectly in line with our efforts as Government to continue investing in this form of theatre, which is so loved and appreciated.” He concluded.
Valletta Cultural Agency CEO Catherine Tabone highlighted the importance of initiatives based on international collaborations. “These are an essential part of the Agency’s Culture Programme, which emphasises quality and strives to make events accessible to a wide audience”.
“Despite the lack of an opera in recent years due to the pandemic, it was always a priority that opera remains an annual appointment on our calendar,” said the CEO of the Manoel Theatre, Massimo Zammit.
“To celebrate the return of the opera, we wanted to do something special this season. I am honoured that we are collaborating with Valletta Cultural Agency and Maestro Jose Cura to produce Tosca. I have no doubt that together we will put on two high-level concerts.”
The cast includes Tania Ivanova in the main role and Carlos Almaguer in the role of Scarpia, together with some of the best Maltese opera singers and KorMalta. Tosca will be performed with the participation of the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Mario De Rose.
These projects are being held as a collaboration between the Valletta Cultural Agency and Teatru Manoel.
