Valletta Cultural Agency Chairman Jason Micallef explained during a press conference, how this varied show paying homage to the 80th anniversary of the Santa Marija Convoy’s arrival on August 15, 1942, begins at 8pm. The show can be enjoyed from Ta’ Liesse, the fast ferry area and the entire Quarry Wharf, which will be closed to traffic.
The Grand Harbour will close to sea traffic at 6pm until the end of the show; therefore any sea passengers wishing to make use of the Cottonera ferries, are advised to make an early crossing so as not to be disappointed.
A post-event bus service to various locations is being organised at 11.30pm and 11.50pm.
The evening opens with Tellieqa Telliqun Race – a fun competition in the Grand Harbor between six teams that will sail their own built-up craft, without the use of oars, machines or other aids. These boats are named for ships of the British naval forces that were present during World War II.
The Italian band Capone Bungt Bangt will perform on a number of instruments made from recycled materials. These include a number of percussion instruments, a drum kit, and the so-called basso da ponte, scopa elettrica and the mazzimba.
The Palace String Orchestra, direction by Ryan Abela, will perform a concert of popular music with arrangements by Maestro Paul Abela. The programme will take us back in time with music from every decade to the forties. The 1970s will also see a special night regatta, making reference to the year 1979, with the participation of six clubs from across the harbour on dgħajjes tal-pass.
“It-Taqtigħa”, written by Jean Pierre Magro and directed by Lee-N Abela, with the participation of the Moveo Dance Comany and a number of prominent local actors, commemorates the Convoy of Santa Marija.
Projections on Fort St Angelo and on 6 spheres of 6 meters each made of 2,500 candles as well as an aerial fireworks show will close the evening.
The Valletta Pageant of the Seas is being organised by the Valletta Cultural Agency, with the support of Visit Malta, the Armed Forces of Malta, Tug Malta, Enemalta and Falzon Group.
