The Minister for National Heritage, the Arts and Local Government, Owen Bonnici, together with Valletta Cultural Agency Chairman Jason Micallef opened the 10th edition of the Valletta Green Festival in St George’s Square, Valletta.
The Minister for National Heritage, the Arts and Local Government, Owen Bonnici explained, “This project is another link in a chain that connects art, culture and the environment, among others. The Valletta Green Festival is the place where one builds memories”.
Valletta Cultural Agency Chairman Jason Micallef said, “This largest edition of the Valletta Green Festival is a gift from the Valletta Cultural Agency to all mothers on Mother’s Day weekend. We invite families to come together to enjoy this green space in the heart of the capital and the activities that have been planned”.
The garden features an impressive 62 mature trees, 5,000 shrubs and bushes, 13,000 flowering potted plants and two ponds. Some of the trees reach heights of up to three meters, comprising a diverse selection of Mediterranean varieties such as Carob, Cypress, Canfora, Oleander, and Olive trees, many of which are between 60 to 80 years old. Spanning an area of 42.82 meters by 27.53 meters, visitors are provided ample space to wander and explore amidst this spring oasis.
Entertainment includes live performances by Trakadum on Saturday 11th May between 10.30 and noon and the 7-piece Ta’ Verna Folk Band between 14:00 and 16:00 on Sunday 12th May (Mother’s Day). A flash mob performance will be happening on Saturday 18th May.
Come and shop from creative entrepreneurs at the Eco Market spread along Old Theatre Street daily from 10:00 to 18:00, in the heart of Valletta. As a key feature of this landmark festival, EcoMarket offers a diverse range of sustainable products including thrift shopping, locally crafted jewellery, art, beauty products, and items for kids and pets. Families can enjoy free face painting for children during weekends. Alongside market stalls, EcoMarket hosts hands-on workshops fostering environmental awareness on May 11th – 12th and May 18th – 19th, between 15:00 and 18:00.
At the Derek Garden Centre Stand and the ERA Stand, visitors can engage in interactive activities and gain insights into sustainability practices.
