The Valletta Design Cluster and the rooftop garden of this building – a legacy project of Valletta 2018 European Capital of Culture which were inaugurated earlier in 2021 – form part of the community space for cultural and creative practice situated in the renovated Old Abattior building (il-Biċċerija) in Valletta, Malta. The main aim of the Valletta Design Cluster is to provide a space and opportunies to Malta’s cultural and creative operators. This project, which falls under the responsibility of the Valletta Cultural Agency, was partially funded by European funds and cost €10.4 million in total.
The Valletta Cultural Agency Chairman, Mr Jason Micallef thanked the Restoration Directorate under the direction of Architect Norbert Gatt, the architect in charge of the project Amanda-Jane DeGiovanni, Japanese Architect Tetsuo Kondo, as well as all contractors and all those who worked on this project, which has now become a gem in the south of Valletta. Mr Jason Micallef said that today this place is a living testimony to the legacy and sustainability of economic, social and cultural regeneration brought about by Valletta 2018.
This special ceremony was held under the patronage of H. E. George Vella, President of Malta and organized by the Planning Authority.
