As part of the Valletta Cultural Agency, the Strada Stretta Concept is organising its first event of the year: So you thought you knew Sammy… The Unknown Sammy Murgo.
The event will take place on the 21st January 2021 at 20:00 at The Splendid on Strada Stretta in Valletta. This event will feature The Sammy Murgo Quartet performing live jazz, enlivening, as always, the character of the street.
With this event, the Artistic Director of The Strada Stretta Concept, Giuseppe Schembri Bonaci, hopes to place a spotlight on the consistently self-effacing icon that is Sammy Murgo. Murgo has been a presence on the local jazz scene since the 1950s and has played at legendary local clubs such as The Kenner Club and The Café Premier during their prime. He has played with three generations of local musicians and has also performed with the famous Maltese composer, Charles Camilleri. Yet despite having such an illustrious career, as well as earning respect from his peers, Murgo chose to sequester himself from fame instead purely dedicating his attention to the music itself.
The Sammy Murgo Quartet consists of Sammy Murgo on the saxophone, Mario Aquilina ‘Il-Cocker’ on double bass, Noel Grech on the drums and Gregory Camilleri on piano. The Quartet will be performing a selection of classic Jazz standards and the best of Swing for a limited audience. The concert will undoubtedly get the audience’s feet tapping and transport them back in time to when this was the music of the day.
Entrance to the event is free but booking ahead is imperative. To book please private message the Strada Stretta Concept Facebook page, or send an email to emma.borg@vca.gov.mt . Please note that due to the ongoing restrictions to combat Covid 19, the event will be livestreamed onto The Strada Stretta Concept Facebook page but there will also be a limited audience. All those attending must remain seated and wear a mask at all times. More information can be found on the Strada Stretta Concept and the Valletta Cultural Agency on Facebook.
