The popular Opera in the Capital concert returns to St George’s Square in Valletta on the 30th August, at 9pm. The event promises a balmy evening of arias and ensembles, showcasing the majestic elements of the human voice – the night’s star attraction.
Tenors Alan Sciberras, Cliff Zammit Stevens and soprano Nadia Vella are taking the stage accompanied by the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra under the musical direction of Maestro Michael Laus.
Tickets for the event are now available on showshappening.com.
Among the highlights are the emotionally charged arias La fleur que tu m’avais jetée from Bizet’s Carmen and È la solita storia del pastore from Cilea’s L’Arlesiana which contrast greatly with the dramatic fervour of Donna non vidi mai from Puccini’s Manon Lescaut.
The evening will also feature the sublime melodies of Louiguy’s La vie en rose, Lippen Schweigen from Lehár’s The Merry Widow, Je veux vivre from Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette, and All I Ask of You from Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera, ensuring a diverse and spectacular repertoire that spans the classical and music theatre traditions.
The beloved Maltese song Xemx and Zammit Stevens’ Fil-Qrib, with their heartfelt lyrics and evocative melodies will also contribute to, once again, make Opera in the Capital an unforgettable experience for both the performers and the audience.
The Minister for National Heritage, Arts and Local Government Owen Bonnici highlighted how this event aims to transport the audience through the power of the voice, in the stunning background of the historical architecture of Valletta. Opera in the Capital celebrates both the art of music and the unique cultural heritage of our capital.
Valletta Cultural Agency Chairman Jason Micallef said “This year’s edition of Opera in the Capital sees accomplished soprano Nadia Vella joining tenors Alan Sciberras and Cliff Zammit Stevens in another high-quality event by the Valletta Cultural Agency. Following the success of the Valletta Pageant of the Seas in June, we are presenting another outstanding open-air event while celebrating the beauty of our capital.”
Valletta Cultural Agency CEO Catherine Tabone highlighted “Opera in the Capital is not just a concert; it’s an experience designed to resonate with both opera enthusiasts and newcomers, celebrating the universal language of music in the heart of Valletta.
