The Valletta Cultural Agency marked the commencement of its Christmas in the Capital programme this evening by switching on the annual Christmas lights in Republic Street, South Street and Merchants Street, along with the inauguration of a Christmas tree in front of Parliament, and a crib set up in St John’s Square. This year’s Christmas tree is truly special. Standing at an impressive height equivalent to 7.5 floors, it features decorations inspired by Maltese traditions. Among these are the iconic Persian blinds and lanterns, as well as a traditional limestone balcony adorned with the Knights’ cross.
The programme includes various festive events lined up till the 31st of December.
These include the traditional Baby Jesus procession, children’s workshop at the Valletta Design Cluster, buskers, street entertainers, musical choirs and concerts by well-known bands and singers including Chiara, Jason Xuereb, Janvil, Riona, Rachel Fabri, Veronique Vella, Franklin, Sean Borg, Centrestage Choir, Cappella Musicale Caeciliana and others.
