The Valletta Cultural Agency is excited to present Transcending the Material – Anthony Spagnol Retrospective, an exhibition celebrating over three decades of artistic exploration by one of Malta’s leading contemporary artists. Curated by Jessica Muscat, this unique retrospective is open from 3rd December 2024 to 8th January 2025 at The Grandmaster’s Palace, Valletta.
Spagnol’s artistic journey, which spans from the early 1990s to the present, moves from figurative works addressing societal and environmental issues to deeply introspective abstract pieces. The exhibition offers a glimpse into Spagnol’s transition from realism to abstraction, a shift that curator Jessica Muscat describes as a “profound awakening—a transcendence of the material into the spiritual.” Through his mastery of form, colour, and texture, Spagnol challenges viewers to engage with the unseen and encourages a dialogue between art, existence, and the metaphysical.
Early works such as The New Power Station (1992) and Wires in Mikiel Anton Vassalli Street (1993) reflect Spagnol’s concern for the environment and society through powerful figurative imagery. In contrast, his later works, such as Transubstantiation (2005) and The Stations of the Cross (2011–2013), lead viewers into meditative spaces that evoke spiritual depth and the intangible aspects of existence.
The exhibition also highlights works inspired by Spagnol’s engagement with literature, music, and his personal reflections on faith and mortality. These pieces reveal the artist’s ongoing exploration of universal themes such as transformation, spirituality, and the nature of being.
Transcending the Material is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm at The Grandmaster’s Palace, with free entrance from Merchants Street. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience this profound artistic journey.
