Magna Żmien: Youth Culture Captured by ‘Il-Gululu’
Summers spent lazying about at Fond Għadir in Sliema; laying on the limestone, sporting swimsuits freshly sewn.
In the mid-20th century, Sliema was the place to be for young people. Sliema’s promenade, once lined with colonial limestone townhouses, used to be filled with cliques of young people. Nowadays, Sliema still persists as a space where younger generations interact, but what has changed in the past 50 or so years? In this talk by Magna Żmien, we’ll be exploring Sliema then and now through the lens of Joseph Darmanin ‘Il-Gululu’, a former president of the Malta Photographic Society whose portraits of his friends in his hometown are a snapshot of an area that has played a vital role in the cultivation of youth culture in Malta for decades.
This event forms part of the Valletta Design Cluster’s Studio Sessions programme.
