The School of Narrative Dance will take place in Republic Street, Valletta, on 30 June 2022, 6-9 PM. To participate fill in the form at the link: www.blitzvalletta.com
Everyone can be a participant, this a voluntary project.
There is no age limit or pre-existing requirement to participate.
You can have artistic experience or not. If you have a special interest – music, dance, singing – you are welcome to let us know, but you are also welcome to express yourself through the lead of chief performer Maria Fonzino, a choreographer, dancer and poet based in Paris with extensive experience with dance and holistic techniques. She will be in Malta with artist Marinella Senatore prior to the event, offering free workshops to all the participants.
The focus of The School of Narrative Dance Malta is togetherness and rebirth after the pandemic. This stage welcomes people and ideas; it is a one-of-a-kind celebration where it does not matter if you have ever danced or spoken in public before. You can be young or old, athletic or disabled. Narrative dance is about recognizing the body as a primary agent of transformation. Your body possesses universal elements of non-verbal communication, posture, and movement that say something about who we are. Music and words will likewise connect us, with your messages and rhythms.
Marinella Senatore is a multidisciplinary artist who delves into
practices of non-hierarchical learning and participatory art. Over
the years she has explored forms of resistance, vernacular and
popular culture, dance, music and activism, in order to rethink
the political nature of communal action and reconcile individuals
and collective bodies. To do so, she experimented with radio
broadcasts, street festivals, operas, musicals and processions
such as The School of Narrative Dance (2012-ongoing),
a participatory project free of charge – centered on the
emancipative power of storytelling, agency and public action –
experienced by 6 million people in 24 countries to date.
The exhibition Something about you is a ten-year survey of
Senatore’s work, bringing together paintings, drawings, videos, a
powerful project with Russian protest group Pussy Riot featuring
a new organic site-specific sculpture, and a public artwork on
the historical façade of Valletta’s Casino Maltese. The exhibition
is intended to inspire a dialogue with people at a time when
collective action seems to be the most effective tool for new
beginnings. The Malta iteration of The School of Narrative Dance
will be the artist’s first post-pandemic participatory project and
will take place in Valletta, a UNESCO World Heritage Centre.
