As part of its Studio Sessions, the Valletta Design Cluster is hosting Crafting Musical Interfaces: Bela Workshop on the 13th April between 11am and 4pm  (4 hours total with a 1-hour lunch break at 1pm).

Explore the fascinating world of electronic musical instrument design in this workshop led by Robert Jack and Giulio Moro from Bela, a company which specialises in creating tools for instrument-building. Open to individuals of all levels, this workshop is tailored for those with a keen interest in technology, sensors, and musical instruments. During the session, participants will engage in guided circuit building using breadboards, gaining hands-on experience in constructing touch interfaces.

Delve into the basics of touch sensing, with a specific focus on capacitive sensing using conductive materials and the inventive use of velostat for DIY pressure sensors. Participants will also have the opportunity to learn basic principles of sound programming, adding a sonic layer to their newfound circuit-building skills. This part of the workshop will be led by Christian Heinrichs, VDC studio resident and one of the early co-creators of Bela.

As our experts guide you through the process, you’ll acquire the essential skills to assemble the fundamental components of a musical instrument, interactive sound installation, or even an innovative interactive product. Whether you’re a novice or a tech enthusiast, this workshop provides a welcoming space for creative exploration of sensors and sound.

This workshop is a satellite event to The Oracle, an immersive, interactive sound installation by Dolphin Club at the Gozo Citadella Grain Silos, showing until 31 May 2024 as part of maltabiennale.art.

Participants are advised to bring their own headphones and laptops (with USB and headphone jack).
