The night of the 26th of November will be dedicated to comedy, where the films The Tramp (1915) by Charles Chaplin and Buster Keaton’s The General (1926) will be shown. The character of Charles Chaplin needs no introduction and his name is automatically associated with The Tramp; a man with a mustache and a hat who always makes us smile. Even though Chaplin interpreted this character in earlier films, The Tramp is considered as being the film that gave birth to the character that we know and love today.
Keaton’s The General is inspired by the Great Locomotive Chase story which took place during the American Civil War.
The second night will be dedicated to horror with screenings of Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde (1912) and The Cabinet of Dr Caligari (1920). Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde is based on the novel by the same name published in 1886 and on the 1887 play. Speculation surrounding the roles of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is rife. Some say that actor James Cruze played both parts himself while others argue that Harry Benham has doubled for Cruze in some scenes.
The Cabinet of Dr Caligari is considered as the quintessential work of German Expressionist Cinema. It is about a hypnotist (Wernes Krauss) who uses a somnambulist (Conrad Veidt) to commit murders.
This is an opportunity not to be missed for all film enthusiasts.
