As part of the Valletta Cultural Agency’s 2021 cultural programme, The Strada Stretta Concept is collaborating with one of Malta’s foremost musicians: pianist and conductor Brian Schembri. The event, which forms part of The Strada Stretta Concept programme under the artistic direction of Giuseppe Schembri Bonaci, will take place over the 15th and 16th October 2021. Each performance begins at 20:00 and will be held at The Splendid in Strait Street, Valletta.
During this evening dedicated to the last year of Schubert’s life, Brian Schembri will be performing Schubert’s Sonata in B flat D960, after giving a short introduction about the composer. This piano sonata famously forms part of Schubert’s last three piano sonatas, all of which are interconnected through style and movement, and which garnered newfound admiration in the twentieth century. Interestingly, Schubert is known to have been a profound admirer of Beethoven’s compositions, which may explain the strong influence Beethoven had on him. To this extent, Schembri’s 2021 performance will serve as a continuation from his 2020 performance at the Splendid, entitled Splendid Beethoven at Splendid, wherein he performed Beethoven’s Hammerklavier. For these reasons, Strait Street will once again evoke a merging of high culture with the accessibility of popular culture, a task which forms part of the project’s artistic direction under Schembri Bonaci.
