Kadenza ta’ Ħolma: Requiem Kalendarju is a powerfully intimate performance which will be delivered by The Strada Stretta Concept within the Valletta Cultural Agency, as its final event for the 2020 calendar.
Kadenza ta’ Ħolma will be live streamed onto the Strada Stretta Concept Facebook page on the 15th December at 20:00 from The Splendid on Strada Stretta in Valletta. This unique event will present a combination of art, poetry and music which will take the virtual audience on a cathartic journey through the twelve months of a year.
The cycle of poems on which the event is based are the original work of The Strada Stretta Concept’s Artistic Director, Giuseppe Schembri Bonaci. The collection is in a variety of languages including Maltese, English and Russian. The work draws inspiration from various directions including Għana, Maltese poetry, European medieval troubadour culture, as well as from the works of prolific literary figures such as William Shakespeare, Arthur Rimbaud, Cesare Pavese, Pablo Neruda, and Boris Pasternak. This will be the first time the collection of poems will be presented to an audience.
The musical composition, by Karl Fiorini, was based on the cycle of poems written by Schembri Bonaci. The lead voice of the composition will be performed by mezzo soprano Clare Ghigo, who will serve as the personal voice of the poet as well as the voice of his subconscious.
Sopranos Francesca Aquilina and Mariele Zammit will be fortifying the poetic and musical structure of the composition. Mariele Zammit will also be adding a reinterpretation of the poems in the form of Għana, which is fundamental to Schembri Bonaci’s creative praxis. Accompanying all the vocalists will be Maria-Elena Farrugia on the piano. Furthermore, the performance will also feature a tapestry like juxtaposition which will showcase projections of paintings by the Paris based artist, Ġoxwa Borg. Without a doubt, one can expect this performance to be powerfully personal as well as vehemently vulnerable.
Kadenza ta’ Ħolma will be live streamed onto The Strada Stretta Concept Facebook page. To find out more, follow The Strada Stretta Concept and The Valletta Cultural Agency on Facebook. Attendance for the live stream of Kadenza ta’ Ħolma is free.
